History
Multiphase Power & Processing Technologies LLC (MppT) was a joint venture formed by Dresser-Rand and Aker Kvaerner in 1998. MppT combined the experience Dresser-Rand has in designing and manufacturing rotating equipment with Kvaerner Process Systems' expertise in packaging and separation technology. The objective was to develop and market proprietary expanders and other equipment to separate gases and liquids and give users the opportunity to generate power from previously wasted energy during oil and gas production.

In August 2005, Dresser-Rand acquired Aker Kvaerner’s 50 percent interest in MppT. Dresser-Rand now has 100 percent ownership of the MppT joint venture, and has renamed the separator business, Rotary Separator Turbines, or RST. With this acquisition, Dresser-Rand now offers advanced technology for rotary separator solutions to the global oil and gas industry.

The Products
Dresser-Rand’s Rotary Separator Turbine (RST) products use unique, patented multiphase designs to separate gases and liquids and, under suitable conditions, to generate power from energy previously wasted in oil and gas production.

RST separation equipment enables oil and gas producers to reduce production platform and subsea module size and weight, and generate power for production.

Benefits for power and processing industries include significantly lower capital equipment costs with cleaner, more compact systems.

RST systems have been supplied for oil, gas and water separation; gas treatment and conditioning; water treatment and utility systems.

Applications where RST technologies make sense:

  • 2- and 3-phase primary oil/gas/water separation
  • High pressure wellhead condensate separation and power recovery
  • Hydrocarbon refrigeration
  • Cryogenic processes
  • LNG production
  • Liquid knock-out (gas scrubbing)
